The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of your child from birth to 5 years old in England.
All schools and OFSTED-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including childminders, preschools, nurseries and school reception classes.
Areas of learning
The areas of learning revolve around the 17 Early Learning Goals (ELG)
We promote learning through play as part of our good practice.

Assessments
We assess progress based on classroom observations, your child won’t be tested, using the Early Learning Goals, which can be found in the early years framework, changing in September 2021.
Information taken from the Gov.uk website, find out more at Early Years Foundation Stage.
The framework ‘does not prescribe a particular teaching approach’ and play is considered ‘essential for children’s development, building confidence as they learn to explore, relate to others, set their own goals and solve problems.’
Furthermore, when planning and guiding what children learn, we reflect on the Characteristics of Effective Learning:
- Playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’
- Active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements
- Creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things
