At Mayfield we promote a love of exploration and intrigue through the use of play-based learning. This allows children choice to engage with other adults and children, or play alone with a variety of hands-on activities at all times.
We encourage learning through ‘doing’ which is integral to early development. By allowing freedom and investigation in objects and scenarios children find interests and passions. By promoting this environment we, at Mayfield, encourage curiosity and creativity; which alongside good, professional relationships with adults allows the children the opportunities to ask insightful questions about the experiences they take part in. Moreover, we ensure our planning is informed by the children’s interests to increase enjoyment.
At Mayfield we also find our use of exploration increase collaboration and connections with others. We think it is important to ensure adults scaffold the children’s learning but do not place a ceiling on their thinking. Our environment is based on mutual respect and inclusivity to ensure equality for all.
Through exploration we encourage children to be curious about discovery and learning. We know how important it is to incorporate real tasks into the activities to allow to children opportunities for real outcomes. We give children time to develop, consolidate and revisit their experiences to ensure full involvement and exploration is possible. Research shows it is important to promote exploration during the early years, because it helps to increases brain, cognitive, development.
